Concrete is strong under compression, but has weak tensile strength.

The most common type of rebar is carbon steel, typically consisting of hot-rolled round bars with deformation patterns.

Other readily available types include stainless steel, and composite sections made of glass fiber, carbon fiber, or basalt fiber.

Normally the concrete cover is able to provide a p H value higher than 12 avoiding the corrosion reaction.

Too little concrete cover can compromise this guard through carbonation from the surface, and salt penetration.
